The Maynilad Water Academy organized a Youth Forum at the 4th Philippine Symposium on Freshwater Biodiversity and Ecosystems, held at the Assembly Hall of Silliman University in Dumaguete City on November 14, 2024. With the theme “Empowering Youth for Sustainable Water Management: Innovations and Actions for a Resilient Future,” the interactive workshop engaged over 150 students in crafting innovative solutions to pressing freshwater challenges in the Philippines.
The forum began with brief but impactful talks by representatives from Maynilad Water Academy, setting the tone for dynamic learning and collaboration. Students were then grouped into clusters to brainstorm sustainable solutions to address critical issues related to freshwater resources. The well-thought-out proposals were later presented to a distinguished panel of reactors.
The panelists, consisting of Engr. Rodora N. Gamboa, Executive Director of Maynilad Water Academy; Adelina Santos-Borja, M.Sc., of the Southeast Asian Limnological Network (SEALNet); Rey Donne S. Papa, Ph.D., Vice President of the Philippine Society for Freshwater Science; and Engr. Robert R. Cabiles, COO of Metro Dumaguete Water, provided constructive feedback to the student groups. Their insights added depth and real-world context to the students’ proposals, fostering a stronger connection between academic concepts and practical applications.

Organized by the Philippine Society for Freshwater Science (PSFS), the event featured the importance of engaging the youth in discussions about sustainable water management. By equipping students with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to contribute to the water sector, the forum highlighted the critical role of the next generation in ensuring the resilience and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems.
The Maynilad Water Academy Youth Forum is a testament to the Academy’s commitment to fostering innovation and leadership in the water sector. By empowering young minds, the event reinforced the value of collaboration in addressing freshwater management challenges and building a sustainable future.
