On May 13, 2024, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines—Museo ni Apolinario Mabini PUP-Sta Mesa hosted a momentous event marking Apolinario Mabini’s 121st death anniversary. Over 60 participants graced this occasion, including parents from Barangay in Manila and students from the History and Science departments of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Apolinario Mabini’s values have been instrumental in shaping the nation. Despite his physical condition, his resilience, dignity, and perseverance align with Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) principles. These values can guide efforts towards improving infrastructure, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education, thereby addressing the challenges in water and sanitation. This connection underscores the relevance of Mabini’s values in contemporary societal issues, demonstrating how his legacy inspires and guides the nation toward progress and development.
The program began with Rosana G. Misolas, Shrine Curator II, MAM-PUP, retelling the life and heroism of Apolinario Mabini. The emcee, Katherine Kay M. Oliveros, who also serves as the Historic Sites Development Officer II, introduced the speakers from Maynilad Water Academy. Ciara Fabroa demonstrated the different processes of water treatment. This was followed by a talk by Edmundo M. Perez II on linking Mabini’s Experience with Water and Sanitation. Oliver Sta Ana, Head of Academic Services, facilitated the question and answer session.
The event was a tribute to one of the Philippine’s national heroes, Apolinario Mabini. It shares the vital topic of water and sanitation. Mabini’s heroism and values can serve as an inspiration to be champions for the environment. It uniquely blended history and science, offering attendees a practical and insightful experience.
