On November 6, 2024, the Quezon City University (QCU) Main Campus in San Bartolome, Quezon City, transformed into a hub of innovation and learning as it hosted the Water Engineering and Science Talks (WEST) Fair & Symposium. At the forefront of this impactful event was the Maynilad Water Academy (MWA), championing the vital causes of water education and sustainability.
The day began with an energetic ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the exhibition area. MWA, alongside partners from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines—Museo El Deposito, Envirokonsult Waterkonsult, and Xylem—showcased cutting-edge technologies addressing water and sanitation challenges. The exhibit provided hands-on experience with the tools and solutions driving advancements in the water sector.
The symposium’s morning session featured a series of thought-provoking talks, beginning with Dr. Theresita Atienza, QCU President, who underscored the university’s commitment to sustainability through its “Green University” initiative. Her address highlighted the importance of integrating environmental stewardship into education, setting the tone for the day’s discussions.
Mr. Jonel Rabusa, representing the National Historical Commission of the Philippines – Museo El Deposito, offered a unique perspective by emphasizing the importance of history in understanding the evolution of water systems. His talk reminded participants that lessons from the past remain crucial in shaping future innovations.
Engr. Rodora N. Gamboa, MWA Executive Director, then took the stage to deliver an inspiring presentation on the Philippine Water Sector. She shed light on the pressing challenges faced by the industry and called for stronger collaboration between academia and industry to foster innovation and sustainability.
Adding to the discussion, Mr. Edmundo M. Perez II, Maynilad’s Technical Advocacy Head, discussed the company’s initiatives in sustainable water management. His presentation also highlighted the growing opportunities for Green Jobs within the water sector, sparking interest among students eager to pursue meaningful careers.
The afternoon session focused on innovation, featuring technology presentations by Dr. Anthony Gedang, President of Envirokonsult and Waterkonsult, and Mr. Jerome Montes, Xylem’s Program Manager for Youth Engagement. Their insights showcased how modern solutions are addressing the pressing demands of water and sanitation.
In addition, QCU’s commitment to academic excellence shone through the Research Conceptualization Competition, where faculty and students presented pioneering ideas to tackle real-world challenges. The session also featured a pep talk by Director Angelito Bautista Jr., QCU’s Research and Extension Director, who outlined the university’s research priorities and vision for the future.
The WEST Fair & Symposium highlighted Maynilad Water Academy’s role in driving collaboration between academia and industry. Through its leadership and active participation, MWA inspires future leaders and fosters a culture of innovation and sustainability in the water sector.
